Lower Cape Fear Hospice Governance
Board of Directors
In 1980, community volunteers interested in the hospice concept of care founded Lower Cape Fear Hospice Inc. in Wilmington. Dr. Daniel Gottovi, a local physician, led the group, which became the first Board of Directors of the organization.
The 20-member Board of Directors has the power for policy making. The board is accountable for the direction, mission, budget and programs of Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
In March 2010, the Board of Directors approved a three-year strategic plan for the organization. Its focus is on serving more people, improving access to care, and increasing awareness. To attain these goals, Lower Cape Fear Hospice is expanding programs, enhancing outreach, and offering more end-of-life education.

Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation Trustees
Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation Inc. serves as the official fundraising and donor stewardship arm of the organization. The Foundation Board of Trustees has the responsibility of sustaining Lower Cape Fear Hospice through annual charitable gifts, special events, and the Endowment Fund.
Trustees work with the Board of Directors and the agency’s Development Department to ensure financial needs are met. Trustees set goals to support and provide necessary funds to grow and expand agency programs and services. Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organization.
Each year, more than $2 million is needed to bridge the gap between reimbursement sources and the actual cost of providing hospice services. These include hospice and palliative care, community grief support for adults and children, and outreach and end-of-life educational programs.
