Memorial and Tribute Tile Gifts
Tile gifts are a permanent, visible way to honor or memorialize loved ones and to support hospice programs and services. Our two Celebration of Life tile walls, designed by Wilmington artist Gayle Tustin, at the Wilmington Hospice Care Center are complete. To continue this tradition, gifts are being accepted for tiles at the base of Safe Passages, our 25th anniversary commemorative sculpture that is part of the Heritage Garden on the Wilmington Hospice Care Center campus. In addition, tiles are placed on the Bountiful Life tile panels at Angel House Columbus County Hospice Care Center in Whiteville. These tiles portray the flora of the area. And at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, the design for a new tile wall called Impressions has been completed, and opportunities to purchase a tribute tile are in place. The tiles will create a wave, another element in the campus that reflects the nature in our region.
Tiles are installed in memory or honor of someone through a gift or gifts of $1,000 or more. Donors are recognized in twice yearly tile ceremonies during which new tiles are dedicated. Tile inscriptions are inscribed in the Book of Honor for each location.
Safe Passages
The Heritage Garden's first "garden room" houses
Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter's 25th Anniversary bronze commemorative sculpture and fountain created by artist Karen Crouch.
Continuing in the tradition of the original Celebration of Life tile mural, tribute tiles embrace the fountain base. Terra cotta tiles, glazed in shades of blue and green, are handstamped by artist Gayle Tustin and placed in tribute of a loved one or special friend through a gift or combination of gifts of $1000 or more.
Why a Tortoise?
Safe Passages calls upon symbols of culture and spirit affirming aging, wisdom, journeys and life passages. The old wise tortoise whose slow, steady pace and strong demeanor symbolize wisdom, patience, endurance and earth. The a gnarled tree growing out of the back of the tortoise, symbolizes the tree of life also in the agency's logo, honors the lives of those who have come before us. Within its branches, a slender vessel represents our fragile being.
